The Stories Behind Our Prints

Long before a wax-print fabric becomes a dress or a two-piece set, it's already telling a story. Across West Africa, textile patterns have carried meaning for generations — some designs mark milestones like weddings and coming-of-age ceremonies, others reference proverbs, local wildlife, or the standing of the person wearing them. A single bold motif can say more than words: prosperity, unity, resilience, celebration.

That tradition of pattern-as-language is what draws us to the fabrics we work with. When we source a print for a new Ceekay piece, we're not just picking something that looks good on a rack — we're choosing a pattern with real roots, and trying to cut and construct it in a way that respects where it comes from while still feeling modern enough for a Tuesday at the office or a Saturday night out.

It's also why you'll notice we rarely repeat the exact same print run twice. Small-batch fabric runs are common in wax-print production, which means the piece you buy from us is genuinely limited — by the time it's gone, that specific colourway usually isn't coming back. We think that's part of what makes wearing it feel special: it's not just an outfit, it's a small piece of a much bigger, older story that happens to fit you perfectly.

How to Style Bold Prints for Everyday Wear

A lot of people love the idea of a statement print but hesitate to actually wear one outside of a special occasion. The trick isn't toning the print down — it's giving it room to breathe. Pair a bold patterned top or dress with solid, neutral pieces around it: plain denim, a black blazer, tan sandals. Let the print be the loudest thing in the outfit and keep everything else quiet.

If you're new to prints, start with one statement piece rather than head-to-toe pattern. A printed blouse with straight-leg trousers, or a wax-print skirt with a fitted white tee, is an easy entry point that still feels intentional. Once you're comfortable, mixing two smaller-scale prints in the same colour family (rather than fighting patterns) is a great next step — think a striped accessory with a florallike motif top, both anchored in the same warm tones.

Accessories are where you can have the most fun with the least risk. A gold cuff, a structured bag, or a head wrap in a complementary colour can tie an outfit together without competing with the main print. And don't underestimate layering — a tailored blazer or denim jacket thrown over a printed dress instantly makes it feel like daywear instead of "occasion only." The goal is simple: wear the print with the same confidence it was made with.

Care Guide

Caring for Your Statement Pieces

Bold prints and statement fabrics tend to need a little more care than a basic tee, but nothing complicated. For most wax-print and chiffon pieces, hand-washing or a gentle machine cycle in cold water will keep colours from bleeding or fading. Turn printed garments inside out before washing, and skip the fabric softener — it can dull the sheen on structured fabrics over time.

Air-drying is almost always the safer choice over a tumble dryer, especially for pieces with ruffles, pleating, or delicate seams. Lay knits flat to dry so they hold their shape, and hang structured pieces like blazers or two-piece sets on a proper hanger rather than folding them, to avoid creasing along the fabric's natural lines.

When it comes to ironing, always check the fabric first — linen handles direct heat well, but many wax prints and synthetic blends do better with a lower setting and a pressing cloth in between. If a piece has embellishments, beading, or embroidery, iron around them rather than over them. And for storage: keep statement pieces out of direct sunlight when not in use, since prolonged UV exposure is one of the biggest causes of print fading over time. A little care goes a long way toward making sure a piece you love now still looks this good next season.
